Indoor air quality at school describes how ventilation, humidity, dust, mold, and odors inside a building affect comfort and health. Most complaints about a stuffy or musty classroom do not need a diagnosis first — they need a clear description and the right person to ask. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s IAQ Tools for Schools program gives schools a structured way to receive, route, and resolve exactly these kinds of reports, and this guide turns that framework into questions a parent, teacher, or staff member can use.

How common are indoor air quality problems in schools?

EPA’s “Take Action to Improve Indoor Air Quality in Schools” page cites a 2014 national estimate that the average U.S. school building was about 55 years old, with nearly one-fourth of schools reporting a building needing extensive repair, and nearly half reporting an indoor air quality problem. A separate 2012 survey EPA cites, the School Health Policies and Practices Study, found only about 48 percent of districts had a formal IAQ management program at that time.
